To paraphrase the great Winston Churchill:
Never in the field of caffeine provision has a coffee shop done so much with so little.
Alright, it’s not a particularly great paraphrase, but it still applies to The Village Grind in Greenville, SC. Situated in the middle of the up and coming arts district known as The Village of West Greenville, this diminutive cafe delivers a coffee experience that feels much bigger than the shop’s square footage should allow.
The shop’s interior is perfectly arranged to provide several seating areas to enjoy coffee and conversation. The rustic wood, exposed brick, and natural lighting combine for an ideal atmosphere. During our visit, we saw individuals, couples, and groups all able to comfortably relax without feeling the least bit cramped. But even with cozy, welcoming surroundings, the folks at The Village Grind are clearly there to do one thing.
To paraphrase the venerable sage Roddy Piper:
They came to chew bubblegum and serve great coffee, and they’re all out of bubblegum.
Anyone who’s ever stared at a coffee menu and been too embarrassed to ask questions like “What’s the difference between a cappuccino, latte, or cafe´ au lait?” or “Do you have decaf?” need not worry. The hand-drawn beverage diagrams allow anyone to order like a seasoned caffeine connoisseur.
(We don’t really think there’s such a thing as a decaf connoisseur, so that second question is probably better unasked.)
The growth of The Village Grind and its reputation in the community are perfectly represented by the fact that after just a short time in business, their menu has grown to accommodate the tastes of its patrons. Their extended menu sign showcases additional specialty drinks, and we can vouch for the fact that the cortado and cortadito are welcome additions. The artistic pour was an unexpected bonus and a perfect example of the smallest details making the biggest difference!
To stand out in a city that offers as many great coffee venues at Greenville, SC, a shop needs to do more than just offer hot coffee and free WiFi. They need something special. A niche. A certain je ne sais quoi. (Don’t quote us, but we’re pretty sure that’s a French term that means “repurposed furniture and artisan donuts”. )
Whatever that “special something” is, The Village Grind has it.
Here at Find Local Joe, we are always on the lookout for new (or new to us), independent, local coffee shops that raise the coffee game another level through their unique approach and dedication to quality. When it comes to The Village Grind, to paraphrase the timeless words of everyone’s favorite frontman, Bono:
We definitely found what we’re looking for. Artisan donuts and all.
