Humans of coffee: Karabo Mashishi

Who is Karabo Mashishi?

I am a young creative person born and raised in Soweto. My environment has highly influenced the kind of person I am. I’m very passionate about style, motoring and design in that order. Apparently I’m a hipster but it’s just who I am. I’m a denimhead, that loves the artisanal movement that is growing in South Africa.

What is your best childhood memory?

It has be the inquisitive child I was, I remember asking my dad about cars and luckily for me he always knew the answers to the never ending questions.

If you had a chance for a “do-over” in life, what would you do differently?

I would probably put all my focus into design, clothing design to be specific. But I am a believer in things happening for a reason so my journey has taken this turn for a specific reason, i’ll find out in the end I guess.

What do you feel most proud of?

I’m proud of the Self-Discovery journey I’ve been on, I feel like I’ve grown a lot in a short space of time. I laugh when I look back at the journey and what I’ve been through.

If you could only keep three possessions, what would they be and why?

My iPhone to keep contact with my people, my Wolf and Maiden Leather Wolfpack to keep all my possessions and my vintage sewing machine to make garments that I can make a living off.

What do you want your tombstone to say?

It would be a message to everyone that would see it.” Live! time is flying.”

Be Authentic, is a denim movement that two friends and I are working on, we parked it for a while but we are still working on it.

We noticed how many people in South Africa wear denim, but none of them or very little of them knew its heritage. We want to educate denim lovers about it and about what a great fabric it is.

Be Authentic is also a denim brand in the works, like the name suggests, we want to make garments using the purest form of denim available and educating people is better with a tangible product (Be Authentic Garments).

What’s your favorite kind of coffee and brew method?

I really enjoy a Cortado, I was introduced to it last year at Father Coffee. I’ve had it once else where before but it wasn’t the same.

My favourite brewing method is the Aeropress Method, I like the fact that you learn all the small details that make a great cup of coffee.

In which coffee shops are we likely to bump into you?

You are most likely to bump into me at Father coffee, they’re currently my most favourite coffee bar, I learnt a lot about coffee there and purchased my Aeropress from them.

Another great place you’re likely to bump into me in is Urban Grind in Parkhurst, they’re not a coffee shop but they have great coffee.

What does a perfect day look like?

The perfect day starts with a great cup of coffee, exploring a new environment with my girlfriend. We both like exploring and trying out new foods. Its a bonus when we can park and just walk.
