Who is Brett Rogers?
Thats a strong philosophical start to this interview! I’m not sure we have enough time for me to self analyse. 🙂
That said, I’m a good guy who was raised right. I have strong opinions with the strength of character to stand behind them, as well as being humble enough to listen to differing views. I have great friends, great family, and a killer music collection. I swear a lot, I cant resist sparkling wine, I adore art and anything aesthetically pleasing.
I’m a person who wants to do things, so generally I say yes to things and give a solid account of myself.
My chameleonic talents allow for me to learn quickly.
I’m terrible at maths, remembering faces. I cant make rice, but make a mean spaghetti Aglio e Olio.
I love fashion, the colour black, conversations and debates.
I prefer consciousness over blind happiness.
What is your best childhood memory?
My family holidays in Knysna are some of my happiest. I have an incredibly large family and we all used to congregate over December at my grandmothers house. These were long weeks of sun, beach, laughter and carefree behaviour.
If you had a chance for a “do-over” in life, what would you do differently?
Nothing, I have no regrets. I have made so many errors and had so many disappointments. But I am happy where I am, and if I’m happy with where I am.. it means those things all happened for a reason.
What do you feel most proud of?
I am most proud of how I think. I think my brain has a cool way of working. Its not necessarily the most efficient working system but it keeps me happy.
If you could only keep three possessions, what would they be and why?
Possessions. I’m not too worried about possessions. I think as long as I’m healthy and my brain is still active, those are the only possessions I need.
Having said that, my friends are precious to me… so if I can possess my friendships till I die, I’d be a happy guy.
What do you want your tombstone to say?
Can you all just be nice to each other please!
What is Food, Booze & Tattoos?
Food, Booze & Tattoos is a travel documentary following me around South Africa finding the best stories that I can find in those fields. South Africa has such a massive richness that we forget whilst we are being shitty to each other.
This is a love story about South Africa through the lives of people who love what they do and do it passionately.
What’s your favorite kind of coffee, brew method or coffee origin?
I adore a Cortado. I like it made my Emmanuel in Exclusive Books in Rosebank. I never sit in a mall … but for Emmanuel I’ll happily sit and enjoy his skills.
Origin, I love a Malawian Coffee, but I’m not knowledgeable enough to make a solid decision on that.
At home I have just a regular French Press, I like a dark roast and punchy bitter flavour.
In which coffee shops are we likely to bump into you?
Bread and Roses. Exclusive Books (for a quick Cortado, before rapidly exiting the mall). You’ll spot me at Pablo Eggs Go Bar when they open a little later in the year. If in doubt, I’m probably in Melville.
In Cape Town:
There is a richness of cafes there, and I …. am a cafe slut. I adore cafes, they make me happy. But if I had to choose one, it would be Haas.
What does a perfect day look like?
Climb out of bed, after caressing the hips of a beautiful woman. I go to the fridge and I see freshly squeezed Orange Juice. I drink it straight from the bottle. I glance out the window and I see the sun glinting off the ocean water, its slightly overcast. After a quiet coffee on the porch, my friends all start arriving till finally theres about 30 people in the house laughing, joking, eating drinking and causing trouble. People start partnering off to have amazing conversations all over the house, so everywhere you go you see people who love each other.
Catch Food, Booze & Tattoos’ South Africa premiere on SABC 3 tonight at 21.00.
