Humans of coffee: Andy Fenner

Who is Andy Fenner? A have a lot of exes. Ex advertising. Ex PR. Ex branding. Even ex property developer. Ex food writer. Current? Butcher & restaurateur. What is your best childhood memory? Eating white bread rolls stuffed with potato crisps on the beach with my family at a tiny seaside cottage, where we went every single year. If you had a chance for a “do-over” in life, what would you do differently? I would take university more seriously, or I just wouldn’t go. I sort-of didn’t do either. I mean, I went. But I just fucked around like a spoilt brat. I wasn’t paying for it and I acted like I wasn’t paying for it. I regret that. I would have learnt a lot more if I had just travelled for a couple of years. With hospitality, especially, personality, willingness to work hard and passion are worth way more than a piece of paper with some qualification on it. That said, if I did go back I’d study something totally different. I mean I …

Humans of coffee: Jo-Ann Strauss

Who is Jo-Ann Strauss? I am a multi-faceted woman who is still trying to figure out what she wants to be when she grows up, but has no intention of growing up too quickly. I am a mom, a wife, a media entrepreneur and enjoy the absence of routine in my life. What is your best childhood memory? My baby brother (he is four years younger) and I riding our BMX bikes around the neighbourhood streets – we grew up in Blackheath in the Western Cape. He had a blue one and mine was red. We would ride through puddles in the gravel roads of our hood and splash each other wet much to our amusement and my mom’s consternation. If you had a chance for a “do-over” in life, what would you do differently? I would probably buy a few properties that I didn’t think I could afford back then. I look at how much I’ve learnt about the property market and realise how my gut instinct was often right and my fears sometimes …

Humans of coffee: Elizabeth Wible

Who is Liz Wible? I’m a 24-year-old New Hampshire native currently living in Boston as I pursue a master’s degree in Integrated Marketing Communication. In other words, yes I’m totally a sucker for colorful leaves, apple cider donuts, and iced coffee no matter the weather! What is your best childhood memory? Whenever I think back to my childhood, I immediately think of a simple moment from when I was about seven years old. It was a sunny, summer day and I remember sitting outside on my family’s lawn in New Hampshire with my younger sister. We were eating lunch next to our kitty pool after having just run in the sprinkler and had the biggest smiles on our faces because we knew we were about to do it again. I didn’t have one single worry on my mind in that moment and it was a beautiful feeling that I feel lucky to remember. If you had a chance for a “do-over” in life, what would you do differently? At times I think I’ve taken myself …

Humans of coffee: Sarah Jackson

Who is Sarah Jackson? I am a busy human. Probably too social for my own good. I am a musician, a song writer, a singer. A creative in many areas. But I think I tend to label myself by my music, which in itself is very scary. To measure my value by what people label me by? It’s a scary thought, that maybe I need to discover or appreciate my worth beyond what I think I am and what I feel I am. What is your best childhood memory? I have many. Probably walking back from the beach to the campsite, side by side with my brother and cousins , singing “I CAUGHT A PUFF UP FISH!” Chuffed with my fishing skills. My brother and some of our friends used to take canoes or kayaks in to the dam and paddle out to the water ski ramps. We would climb up and pour dish washing liquid over it. Then we’d slide down in to the water. And repeat. Best times. If you had a chance for …

Humans of coffee: Winston Thomas

Who is Winston Thomas? Winston Thomas is a god serving, people loving, coffee consuming individual. I live in Strand, a small town outside the greater Cape Town. What is your best childhood memory? My family used to own a house right by the sea at a place called Buffelsjagsbaai or also known as “Buffelsjag.” We’d go there every long weekend and for holidays every year. Most of my favourite childhood memories took place here. Playing sport with my brother, fishing, snorkelling, running around the beach etc. I remember my father taking myself, my brother and a few friends to a little bay where fishing boats would go out. Each with a mini fishing rod in hand we’d walk through knee high water to a spot of rocks and catch fish called “harders.” The house no longer exists. It was built right behind a sand dune and over the years the dune eventually moved over the house. There was nothing we could do about it, a natural disaster so to speak. So I like to think …

Humans of coffee: Shashi Naidoo

Who is Shashi Naidoo? I love life, and with me, what you see is what you get. I’m a straightforward person and as open as a book. I live my life positively and love hard. However, I vigorously stand up for what I believe in and defend the ones I love. I’m a quirky social butterfly and a driven entrepreneur at the same time. I’m a  self-confessed shoe addict and fashion lover. I pride myself in, what I believe, is  a fabulous collection from all over the world – an investment piece here and a bargain find there, so to speak. I consider myself to be so blessed to have a job that allows me to travel and see the world. One of my greatest passions is interior decorating and if I wasn’t doing what I do now I would be following in the footsteps of my design icon, Kelly Hoppen. I actually did the interiors of my own home and its my pride and joy! When you’re my friend, you’re also my family. I …
