Humans of coffee: Adriaan Louw

Who is Adriaan Louw?

An architect, a photographer, a DIY enthusiast, an avid traveler, a Land Rover owner, a proud Pretorian, a husband, an opportunist, an extrovert, an urban explorer and now a Human of Coffee. Jokes aside I am all those things, a dabbler of sorts. I am also not ashamed to admit that I am still figuring out who exactly Adriaan Louw is or at least who he wants to be.

What’s your best childhood memory?

I hope this isn’t being psychoanalyzed but I fondly recall two things from my early childhood. Taking everything apart, especially with some brute force and exploring the roof space of my Dad’s garage. He is somewhat of a hoarder and this mysterious wonderland always produced interesting finds. The Garage is still the place where we bond and fix our Land Rovers.

If you had a chance for a “do-over” in life, what would you do differently?

I don’t really believe in do-overs, I think I have come up to this point for a reason. I have always attempted to make the most of life. It’s this transition into adulthood while balancing my urge to run away opposed to being responsible that has me baffled.

What do you feel most proud of?

I really struggle to praise myself, I am forever discontent but I’m fairly proud of my photography. I am also reasonably proud of the walking tours I started in Pretoria. You can find it on the blog.

If you could keep only 3 possessions, what would they be and why?

In no specific order:

  • my 1995 Land Rover Defender, @dakrakthedefender (Yes it has its own IG account)
  • my Camera, obviously
  • even though I love my architecture books and artworks my phone is too essential.

What would you want your tombstone to say?

I’d probably opt for a cremation and be scattered somewhere foreign. But I do use this phrase as an excuse for my unintended arrogance: “If you don’t believe in yourself, how do you expect others to?”

What is

Simply, it’s a travel/lifestyle blog but it’s also more. My wife (@nadjalouw) and I do a fair bit of traveling and for some reason accidental or intended we usually stray off the regular path. We figured we might as well share our approach to travel and try and make some friends as we go along. We’re launching our “louwkul” insider series soon and this is a next phase where we collaborate with local people in places across the globe for our readers to get an insight into what a day in that city can be like as a local.

What’s your favorite kind of coffee?

Definitely a cortado, it packs the punch I need but it doesn’t say I am angry at life like a double expresso.

In which coffee shops are we likely to bump into you?

Grounded at Echo in my suburb, Urban Eatery in the Pretoria CBD, Vintage Coffee in Menlo Park

What does a perfect day look like?

I prefer a slight delayed start as I am no morning person, this is followed by my aeropress ritual to get the day going. A good breakfast is key and my wife makes a proper one. If I am lucky we’d be heading somewhere exciting, the ideal day should include a roadtrip or mission somewhere with friends and definitely end with a braai and some sundowners.
