Humans of coffee: Kelsey van der Merwe

Who is Kelsey van der Merwe? I think I have spent most of my twenties trying to figure that out. I grew up being told I could be whoever I wanted to be, but I have found that there is something so beautiful about becoming who we were created to be. So if I had to describe myself today…I am a coffee loving, aspiring writer who loves to teach and dabbles in Marketing to make a living. What is your best childhood memory? I think it’s difficult to pick just one. But my favourite childhood memories would have to be family dinners. I absolutely love food and my fondest memories involve food and family. We would always eat together at the table. My dad and grandfather were master storytellers and we’d spend hours after dinner listening to them. It always involved a lot of laughter and, very often, a few exaggerated stories. That was part of what made these moments so precious. An equally fond memory are conversations with my Grandmother. She was an incredible woman with a …

Humans of coffee: Danilo Acquisto

Who is Danilo Acquisto? Danilo is a dynamic, you-can’t-put-me-in-a-box, energetic, humorous, faithful and kind entrepreneur and jack of all trades who happens to at this present moment find himself on TV and Radio. Well that’s what I am known for, at least. What is your best childhood memory? I will never forget being woken up on my birthday every year by my mother, father and brother with a specialised and designed kiddies cake a presents and I would sit on my bed with all this love being showered over me and just feeling bewildered. I missed that moment when I moved out of home. Just the sheer joy of waking up before they got to the room and pretending to sleep like you weren’t expecting it and being so excited to know what gifts I got. It was always a highlight of a year.   If you had a chance for a “do-over” in life, what would you do differently? I think if I look way back with current knowledge I would have been less stubborn …

How does an Aeropress champion brew an Aeropress?

Dan Erasmus runs one of the latest and most exciting additions to the Johannesburg speciality coffee scene, Firebird. And he won the 2013 South Africa Aeropress championship with this recipe. Ingredients: Coffee: Long Miles Coffee Gaharo Hill Peaberry Coffee dose: 17.5g Coffee grind: medium-coarse Water weight: 220g Water temperature: 94 degrees celsius 1.  Bloom for 25 seconds.   2.  Fill to 220g. 3.  Steep for one minute.   4.  Then stir, put on filter cap, flip, and slowly press. Champion tip: let it cool a lot before drinking it, the flavour will be much more intense and the sweetness will grow. Photography by Creative Wei

Humans of coffee: Charl Smit

Who is Charl Smit? Charl Smit is a very basic guy with lots of ideas in a very busy mind. I am a very creative person and my mind never ever stops thinking. Before leaving home at 06:30 every morning I have conjured up multiple business ideas, plans to improve humanity, ways to solve corruption and very many other things. I also love being active and outdoors, and if i were any any other industry I would be a rugby player, coach, referee or something else in rugby. But above all I’m spiritual, not in a conventional way but in my way. What is your best childhood memory? Playing cricket with my little brother in our backyard. If you had a chance for a “do-over” in life, what would you do differently? Take more risks. Learn from older people. Travel and work abroad more before starting a family. Listen to the small still voice inside me. Be myself more. What do you feel most proud of? I’m most proud of my son that’s 2 years old as …
