Cappuccino, Latte, Mocha, Flat White: What’s The Difference?

The choice of coffee is no longer one of whether you’ll take it with sugar, milk or black. Nowadays every local and chain café offers a wide range of coffees of which most are espresso based. While many people probably know that an espresso is a small shot of black coffee and a cappuccino has milk, the difference between a cappuccino, flat white, latte or mocha might be harder to pin down. Whether you want to be savvier at the coffee shop or replicate the drink you like the most at home, here’s your guide to untangling the differences. So, how can we make differentiate between cappuccino vs latte vs mocha vs flat white? The Basics: Espresso and frothed or steamed milk First of all, it’s important to know that all these drinks begin with a strong shot of espresso and then use varying amounts of frothed or steamed milk. A cappuccino, for example, will use equal parts espresso, frothed and steamed milk, whereas a latte will be largely steamed milk with a small amount …

Humans of coffee: Duan Wanty

Who is Duan Wanty? I am a dreamer. A romanticist. A seeker of truth in all things. I yearn for beautiful human connections and I ask the questions that I never get answers for. I believe that we live two lives; a spiritual one and a human one, and the ultimate goal is to find the balance. I freakin’ love life; the good, the bad, the beautiful and the ugly. I am 29 [so close to 30], I studied BA Drama at the University of Pretoria so by profession; I am an actor but I have now decided to call myself a ‘creative freelancer’ [for lack of a better title]. What this basically means is that I am still working on what I believe is my calling; which is telling stories, but that I have the desire to develop as many other skills as I can. I’m still in my twenties for a few more days, I am allowed to say: “Im still figuring it all out.” What is your best childhood memory? I was …

How to order your favorite coffee from any coffeeshop

Isabel Jones is a wife, barista and blogger. Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, now living in in Lake Charles, Louisiana, she has a wonderfully funny husband and a dog named Doge. And she was kind enough to share this post with us. Coffee has blown up! Anywhere you go you can guarantee there will be a coffee shop, but you can’t guarantee you will be able to recite an order and get the same drink every time. Coffee has so many origins and so many traditions, and there was never really a big meeting where all the big coffee lords decided on a standard for all coffee shops to follow. I mean, there’s no way you can walk into any old coffee shop, order the macchiato and expect the same thing every time. This is why I want to give you a barista’s guide to getting exactly what you want from any coffee shop! The basics This is a good place to start. Generally, any drink you order stems from the four basic drink recipes. Once you know these, …

Jozi Blue

Trust me, I know how difficult it is to get into coffee. I remember the first time I had a proper chat with a barista. He had just served me a flat white. It looked like a cappuccino to me but I wasn’t in the mood for an argument. Instead I did the slow nod of appreciation. He began to explain that they were serving a Guatemalan that day. I had a quick look around but didn’t notice anyone interesting. He carried on to say that he was excited for me to taste it as it was a “complex coffee with hints of cocoa.” I nodded some more. I was still nodding when I realized he had stopped talking and was waiting for me to take my first sip. While I sipped he added that coffee generally is amazing. That while wine has about 750 “taste profiles”, coffee has more than 1500! Then he paused his excitement and asked: “So what do you think?” I assumed he wanted to me to distinguish which of the 1500 …
