Humans of coffee: Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen

Who is Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen? Someone with a generous flow of ambition and drive, who was brave enough to follow his dream of owning a small restaurant. A perfectionist at heart with an eye for aesthetics and someone who sticks to what he knows, and does not believe in shortcuts  but in hard work and long hours. Someone who preserves and embraces tradition, while daily trying to bring people together through good food and hospitality. What is your best childhood memory? Spending time with my mother and grandmothers in the kitchen, chasing the chickens on the farm, “klei lat” and fishing, and my mothers peppermint crisp tart.   If you had a chance for a “do over” in life, what would you do differently? I’d rather regret the things I have done than the things I haven’t done. What do you feel most proud of? Restaurant JAN, MARIA and receiving a Michelin star.  If you could keep only 3 possessions, what would they be and why? My grandmothers recipes as we use them …

Humans of coffee: Neill Anthony

Who is Neill Anthony? Neill Anthony is first and foremost a cook with a massive passion for ingredients and the people that produce them, without amazing ingredients our job as cooks/chefs is made impossible and not fun at all. I get really excited about stuff like white asparagus, wild mushrooms, local rare breed meat – it gets me out of bed in the morning. I can’t wait to cook ingredients like this whether it be in a lavish multi course dinner for a client or just grilling some asparagus and eating it with garlic mayo. So I am a cook. I will never stop cooking and will never get bored of it. It makes me happiest and also makes others happy which is what its all about. As chefs and cooks we do sometimes forget that thats what we are here to do. What’s your best childhood memory? My best childhood memory does revolve around food. I come from a big family and we were always in the kitchen. My mom is a massive inspiration …

Humans of coffee: Kamini Pather

Who is Kamini Pather? I’m just a girl, standing in front of the world, asking it to feed me. To be fair, my entire life, up until now, has been a glorious web of beautiful accidents. Granted, I have hustled my way into most spaces but opportunities don’t just happen, you need to push, to annoy, to provoke them into existence. And thankfully, I am ballsy enough to do that and to face rejection. It’s really part of the deal to having a life that is designed by and for you. I forget who said this and I’m sure that I paraphrase but the sentiment is correct – “nothing worth having was easy to get”. But who am I? Isn’t that the eternal question that plagues us all? I think I’m at a point where I know what I am not which then defines who I am a little better. So… I am not trendy or a slave to fashion. I wear what I like and like what I wear. I try to keep things …
